Our Mission
Welcome
to Trinity Learning Community (TLC), a trans-denominational educational
institution which offers Bachelor and Master degree programs as
well as courses for those who are not seeking a formal degree but
wish to come to a deeper understanding of the Christian faith and tradition.
Several years ago, a group of pastors, leaders and academics came
together to discuss opening a new school of ministry. At that time, their
vision was to train the next generation of pastors and leaders to communicate
the gospel to a post-modern generation. Since then, that vision has expanded
to educating those who do not seek professional ministry, but wish to explore
further their faith and become more fully equipped to minister in their
daily lives, at work, home and the church.
TLC did not want to be an academic institution in which students
would come, listen to a learned professor lecture for several hours, memorize
information for the sole purpose of passing an exam and then graduate with
a degree that would have a negligible effect on the student as a person.
We are different. We place a high value on relationship which is reflected
in the way in which our courses are taught. Our small, interactive classes
and Socratic method of teaching bring students and faculty together in
community. This is why ‘community’ is in our school name. As
students and faculty, we come together to minister and learn from one another
aware that we are created in the image of a God who is relational in his
very being.
Students will find that several key themes will emerge throughout
their courses that reflect some of TLC’s emphases. Among these are:
a commitment to Jesus’ message of the kingdom of God as inaugurated
by Jesus Christ, a studied consideration of how God as triune is relevant
to our lives and understanding and a narrative approach to the biblical
text and theology that helps students understand God’s unfolding
story. Indeed, what if the world and the Church were to hear the story
of God in new ways by story tellers who are equipped to share it in any
setting? Trinity Learning Community speaks to postmodern generation by
restating the biblical story for the 21st century and helping others communicate
the gospel in this context through the art of story. Because God has put "eternity
in the hearts of human beings" (Ecclesiastes 3.11), we believe that as
people begin to connect the dots between the biblical narratives they will
recognize God’s purposes as he moves human history toward its appointed
destiny.
Trinity Learning Community values the entire body of Christ. We are
praying, as Jesus did, that the Church would be in unity so that the world
may see us and. With that in mind, we work with churches, students, and
leaders from all Christian denominations around the globe to educate future
leaders to fulfill the commission of Christ. As we do this, our attitude
is aligned with that of St. Augustine as he said, “In the essentials
unity, in the non-essentials liberty and in all things charity.”
Living Theology: How Classes are Taught
Good theology is fertile and life-giving. It is about exploring deeply
the things of God as we engage with His unfolding story. This is the task
of every believer, not just pastors and academics. Our vision was to bring
actively work to deepen theological understanding within the Church and
enrich ministry. Not everyone has the time or the desire to attend a seminary.
So, instead of students taking years out of their lives and perhaps moving
away to attend a seminary or university, TLC brings the education to the
students in their local environment with the hope that these students will,
in turn, affect the Church and world in their unique way.
Live Classes
Trinity Learning Community is unlike most programs that you will
find at seminaries, colleges or online. TLC has merged the best of several
worlds, offering top faculty combined with a small-class setting.
TLC classes are taught in small groups of around 10 students. Each
course meets for three hours of class time per week for five weeks. Courses
are held sequentially for a total of eight courses per year. Students move
course to course as a group providing an opportunity for students to come
to truly know one another, learning and ministering to one another as friends,
not just as fellow students.
Our faculty are diverse and come from many Christian traditions.
Many of our local professors are pastors with advanced academic training,
thus giving them an unusual ability to mentor students not only in solid
theology but in practical ministry skills as well.
Each class has two professors. The first is the local professor (who
usually holds a Master’s degree or higher). This professor interacts
with the student in an educational, pastoral, mentoring and ministerial
manner during the student during their entire schooling, not just one class.
The second professor (usually a PhD or recognized leader) is the specialist
in the course material who brings their input to the class via video.
Distance professors vary according to the course subject. The local professor
then draws out the implications of the distance professor’s material
and the reading while bringing his/her own learning to the table. Students,
then, receive the dual benefit of instruction from a number of outstanding
academics and leaders in their respective fields while concurrently building
a personal relationship with the local professor who works closely with
the student.
Online Learning - Distance Learning Courses
Trinity Learning Community recognizes that many students will not
have the opportunity to participate in our live classes. We have
developed a distance, online program for these students who are
interested in Distance Learning Colleges. For those who are interested
in our online distance learning program, please visit our Distance
Learning page.
We hope that you will join us as we seek together to understand more
deeply the wonders of God’s enduring narrative and our own places
within the greater story of God. |
